What is Lorem Ipsum, and why do designers still use it?
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled pseudo-Latin with the distribution of natural language but no meaning. Because it reads like text without saying anything, reviewers judge layout and typography instead of copywriting.
Where it comes from
The passages trace back to Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC), scrambled by typesetters into the now-canonical opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…". It entered digital design through Letraset transfer sheets and was popularized by desktop publishing software.
Its longevity is no accident: readable-but-meaningless filler has a normal-looking mix of word lengths and sentence rhythms, which keeps line breaks and paragraph shapes realistic.

Match the unit to what you are designing.
Use paragraphs
Full paragraphs reveal how columns, spacing, and rhythm behave under realistic content density.
Use sentences
Cards, alerts, and summaries need one or two sentences—enough to test wrapping without overflowing on purpose.
Use words sparingly
For buttons and labels, real strings usually beat filler. Lorem words are fine for pure width testing.
